Duties

  • Under general supervision, performs duties in the Independence Police Department associated with processing evidence at all types of crime scenes, collecting all evidence and conducting necessary tests on the evidence.
  • Maintains chain of custody of evidence.
  • Testifies in court regarding the crime scene and the evidence collected.
  • Maintains and issues supplies for the unit.
  • Maintains computerized monthly activities list.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred; -AND- one to two years of progressively responsible related experience;
  • -OR- any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Requires drug testing, background check, polygraph/lie detector;
  • In addition to the application, testing and/or examinations may be required for further consideration on this position.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.
  • Must complete IAI certification within two years of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques for collecting and processing evidence at a crime scene;
  • Principles and practices of law enforcement operations;
  • Recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques;
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary;
  • Medical terminology;
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment;
  • Developing and processing film;
  • Establishing points of origin for measurements of crime scenes, fingerprints, etc.;
  • Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
Mental and Physical Demands
  • Ability to read and interpret documents;
  • To operate and repair equipment used;
  • To write routine reports and correspondence;
  • To add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, and life and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Typical Working Conditions
  • Frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Working conditions are typically moderately controlled.
  • Work time may require irregular hours, call-out responsibilities, and shift schedules.
